A New Year
As was leaving the library today, Tony the Tiger got on the elevator. I was excited, since he is one of my all-time favourite cereal mascots, along with Lucky the Leprecaun and Toucan Sam. I even had a life size cutout of Tony in my room in first year. I gave him a hug, and he went his way, presumably to promote some Kellogg's cereal bars.
This afternoon I attended the second Yiddish class of my life, and the first in 14 years. I learned how to say: "Ich voin in Toronto. Vu voinst du?" I live in Toronto. Where do you live?
Tonight I went to the Undergraduate Journal of Middle Eastern Studies' inaugural meeting of the year. Six other people showed up, among them Meggie Shields, David Buchbinder's personal manager, and Michael Bonner, the aspiring Byzantologist. He taught me this poem by Rumi: "Dar eshq mast bash, ke eshq ast harche hast". In love be drunk, for love is all that there is.
